About Me

Cathy hails from Yorkshire in the UK – an area better known for its beer than its wine! After completing her degree in English at Cambridge University (where she also ran the college bar for two years), she took a year out to travel to Australia and Asia. Returning to the UK she worked for a direct marketing company before joining Adnams Wine Merchants where she progressed through all her WSET exams, culminating in the Diploma in 1998. During her time with Adnams, she visited wineries in Australia, California, France, Germany, England and has also visited breweries and distilleries around the world.

Cathy and husband Kevin first came to South Africa in 2001 and finding a dearth of decent places to drink, they opened The Nose Restaurant & Wine Bar – at the time, the only wine bar in the city. After seven successful years, they sold The Nose in 2009 and since then Cathy has concentrated on writing and educating people on and about wine.

Cathy is the only Approved Programme Provider in Southern Africa for the UK-based Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) offering internationally-recognised wine and spirit courses which are the industry norm in 60 countries around the world. For details of the courses, go to www.thewinecentre.co.za. Cathy also tastes for the Platter Wine Guide, Classic Wine magazine, SAA and other competitions. She and Kevin have a young son and live in Wynberg.

Kevin operates a social media management company which does work on behalf of various wineries. Cathy is not involved in the day-to-day running of this company, she only writes about events and wines which she has experienced personally and when she does write about one of her husband’s clients, clearly makes reference to his business interests within the article concerned.

Cathy is sponsored by Goodfellas (www.gfellas.co.za), a chauffeur service which ensures that she does not drink and drive.
